OMG heavy on the "shuckin’ and jivin’ to make your money for other people’s entertainment." Content was always meant to be fun and show you life in your own "aesthetic" wa,y but it's turned into a money scheme so quickly. Your interpretation of the Black Mirror episode was so eye-opening because I haven't watched it in a while, but now I'm convinced I have to re-watch every episode. I feel exactly this way. I just feel like someone is alwaysssss watching! Praying for this new generation because they think everything is easy through the internet.

I was over here re-watching Black Mirror and it's really crazy how close we are to it now. Content deff used to be fun for sure because everyone put a $$ amount on it. We just gotta get in where we fit in at this point.

Okay. I have to tap back into Black Mirror. I've skipped around watching episodes but I think in today's climate, it may be required watching.

I have started streaming on Twitch as a way to promote my knitting and submitted an audition for a reality tv show. I'm excited by the prospect of both opportunities, but I only signed up for them because I lost my job and needed to figure out how to sell my knitwear. It's so hard to shake the feeling I'm in Black Mirror haha, specifically that 15 million merits episode

long term, i hope people buy my knitting designs and fabrics and books. i hope i don't have to be internet famous for it to work and in 5 years I hope I'm not reliant on the internet for income. It'd be a bitch to have to compete with AI and dumb robots

No I completely get it! These days it seems like you do have to be an internet star to make anything work these days. I've thought about doing Twitch, but idk I just can't see me doing it lol one going live makes me so nervous and then I'm like thats a whole other platform to learn. How is it going so far? I always think like I wouldn't want to share my life on there but I think doing a craft would be fun and different!

it's honestly been kind of fun! I've been slowly trying to make Affiliate and build out a textile community of other textile streamers. I mostly sit on camera and yap about my neo-luddism or tv I've been watching and the craft I'm working on. I actually start every stream with a 15 minute reading segment which feels like my own little protest online hehe.

if you like watching streamers, you might like live streaming. There's a slight learning curve, but not impossible to learn. Plus your early streams will have such low views, you can kind of let everything be a mess for a second.

GIRL, there was a point in time where I wouldn't watch Black Mirror. My homeboys convinced me to watch an episode and it was too trippy so I stopped lmao. I'm over that now and I feel you completely.

I totally get what you mean about the general obsession with watching people live their lives. I also questioned whether me watching vlogs fell into this same framework but it feels so different. I actually work in the streaming industry so I get the appeal but for me, it's not necessarily the type of content I'd like to pour myself into.

While there's streamers who do it for the love of it and true creative expression, it's a little scary when people join just for the monetary gain so much so that they essentially become NPCs whose fate (for lack of a better word) is up to their viewers and/or the highest bidder.

That last sentence 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 their fate being up to the highest bidder is so right. I love Black Mirror I’ve always been obsessed but now I see how it can really mess with your mind. Vlogs feel so different idk it’s not the same lol but I also do frequent social media breaks because yea consuming people’s lives can unintentional mess with your mental. One of the reasons I got out of entertainment media…so you get it!

For sure can mess with your mind and my friends would always want to watch after we smoked liked some damn weirdos lmao.

Social media breaks are always needed and omg same. When I first started writing, I wanted to do entertainment but after one internship it became evident it would mostly consist of me waking up every morning to deep dive into celebrities lives before I wiped the crust out my eyes.

Hated it and never looked back!
